November is national Adoption Month, and that's why Iowas Kidsnet is ready to sponsor several events as part of Nationals Adoption Day.

Iowa KidsNet is proud to join with child welfare advocates and families across the country in celebrating November's National Adoption Month, a time to raise awareness about the 129,000 children in the U.S. waiting to be adopted from foster care and to recognize people who make a difference in their lives.

There are about 165 children in Iowa who are waiting for adoptive homes, according to the Iowa Department of Human Services.

"Many people don't realize that there are children right here in our state of Iowa who are waiting to be adopted," said Kelli Malone, Iowa KidsNet project manager. "More adoptive families are needed so that all of Iowa's children can have the safe, loving and permanent home they deserve. Even if you can't commit to being a foster or adoptive family, there are still many things you can do to raise awareness in your community about the needs of Iowa children."

Children waiting to be adopted from foster care were removed from their homes because of abuse, neglect or abandonment; some will wait five years or more to be adopted, a lifetime to a child. Each year 26,000 children in foster care turn 18 and age out of foster care in our nation without finding a family.

As part of National Adoption Month, events are held across the state to raise awareness of the need for more adoptive families. The Heart Gallery of Iowa, a photo exhibit of Iowa children waiting to be adopted, will be on display at locations across the state. Iowa will also hold five Adoption Saturday events, a day when courts open their doors to finalize many adoptions of children from foster care on one special day, in Ames, Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Des Moines and Sioux City.
