DUBUQUE (KWWL) - Dubuque Hempstead is back in the playoffs for the first time since the 2003 season. Wednesday night, the Mustangs hosting Davenport Central in a 4A first round substate game. Before the game Hempstead head coach Mark Ehlers said the game plan was to do what they do best. Sounds easy right but does was it good enough to beat Davenport Central?
It was hard to tell in the first half . Scoreless until the second quarter, Davenport Central gets on the board with this hail mary of a pass from Nick Bakeris, its caught by Keyvan Rudd, almost 80 yards for the touchdown. 7-0 Davenport early on.
But just before half Hempstead makes it happen. Quarterback Matt Ehlers scrambles in the pocket. Finds a wide open Tyler McAtee. It's a quick six and it'd stay that way after a missed extra point. 7-6 at half.
In the third quarter, Brock Haas runs up the middle for the three yard TD. 15-7 Hempstead. Finally to seal the win in the 4th, Ehlers with the 30 yard pass to Alex Brown. It's 23-7. Mustangs over the Blue Devils.
The Mustang defense is a lot to thank for this win. Although the offense put up some points in the second half, the defense stopped Davenport numerous times on third down forcing the punt. At least three times they stopped Davenport inside their own 10. Tough road ahead, the Mustangs will take on 9-0 Iowa City High. And as Brock Haas and Coach Ehlers said tonight they'll be celebrating but tomorrow it's back to work.
