Kehoe trial underway

GRUNDY CENTER (KWWL) - Opening statements are expected to start Thursday morning in the trial of Michelle Kehoe.

Kehoe's charged with killing her two year old son and severely injuring her six year old son in Buchanan County in October 2008.  Wednesday morning, the question first and foremost asked was have you heard of this case?  Just about everyone in the jury pool raised their hand affirmatively.  So attorneys are focusing on making sure jurors have not formed an opinion on the case.

Authorities say Michelle Kehoe and her two sons were supposed to be traveling to Sumner to visit family.  The next morning, she was in rural Buchanan County saying she'd been carjacked.  Her two year old son Seth's body was found nearby.  Her six year old son Sean was hurt.  Kehoe was also injured.  Authorities have accused Kehoe of taping her sons' eyes, noses and mouths and cutting their throats with a knife.  They say Kehoe also cut her own throat.  They say she later admitted to buying the knife and duct tape months earlier. Defense attorneys have indicated they'll use an insanity defense. The trial is expected to last ten to 14 days in Grundy County. It was moved there due to pre-trial publicity, though many jurors admitted they'd heard about the case and sometimes discussed it with others.  The question is whether those jurors can stay impartial.

About 125 people were called for jury duty.  37 are in the jury pool with 12 jurors and three alternates to be selected. Tru TV will be broadcasting portions of the trial live to a nationwide audience. KWWL will also be in the courtroom.
