Iowa City (KWWL) -- A former Hawkeye All-American is giving back to his alma mater to help with the Carver Hawkeye Arena rennovations.

Ronnie Lester, the assistant general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers, is giving $100,000 to the UI Foundation in support of the project.

Lester played basketball for the Hawkeyes from 1977 - 1980.

The training room at the remodeled Carver-Hawkeye Arena will be named after longtime UI athletic trainer John Streif at the request of Lester.

Streif and Lester and have been close friends since Lester's playing days.

Lester is also a member of the committee leading the way to raise at least $20 million to update the 26 year old facility.  UI Director of Athletics Gary Barta says that no state funds will be used for the project.
