Those who decide to stay in FEMA homes will pay rent

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- People who decide to stay in temporary FEMA homes past the initial deadline of Nov. 27, will pay rent beginning Nov. 28.

According to a representative of FEMA in the Des Moines office, the people currently living in the homes will pay an amount of rent based on fair market value determined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Other factors also contribute to the amount of rent families will pay including family composition and income.

FEMA granted a seven-month extension allowing Iowa flood victims to live in temporary housing until next June.

FEMA made the decision at the request of U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack.

There are now 124 families in the mobile homes.

The number using the housing is down from nearly 200 last August. At its peak after the 2008 flooding, 564 families were using the temporary units.
