One state funded agency ahead in finances despite budget cuts

WATERLOO (KWWL) Despite the announcement of across the board state budget cuts, at least one agency covering several eastern Iowa counties is ahead when it comes to finances.

Black Hawk County Community Services is an umbrella agency that includes mental health and disability services in five counties. Those five counties are Black Hawk, Cerro Gordo, Floyd, Butler and Mitchell.

Through property tax money and state funding, the money available is $14 million. With budget cuts, $1.4 million of that would be lost. But, community services is actually ahead financially because of the federal stimulus.

"We reduced what we owe for medicaid services by $2 million. So this year we're netting out ahead $600,000," said Community Services Director Bob Lincoln.

Lincold said despite being ahead this year, the agency is looking ahead to the future because the federal stimulus money won't be available every year.
