Today's Sweet Tooth: Kathy's Pies in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) No matter what type of pie you enjoy, you're sure to find it at Kathy's Pies in Cedar Rapids.

"Our chocolate creme is our number one seller. That's the one with all the chocolate curls on top," said Terri Henecke.

Henecke co-owns the business with her sister Kathy. Terri's dad originally opened the pie shop in 1986. Sister Kathy was his first employee. Terri joined the family business around 1994.

Kathy's Pies sells pies at its location at Fifth Avenue Southeast in Cedar Rapids, as well as numerous restaurants and locations around eastern Iowa.

Thanks to a large oven, which can bake 100 pies at a time, Kathy's Pies makes and bakes hundreds in just one day.

"Around 150 to 175 is an average day. Friday easily can be 400 pies. We go everywhere on Friday. We go up to Waterloo, Cedar Falls and then down to Iowa City, the Amanas then Muscatine," said Henecke.

Henecke said the busiest day of the year in the pie business is the day before Thanksgiving.

"Thanksgiving is our Super Bowl. We will do in two days almost 4,000 pies," said Henecke.

Probably not too surprising, Henecke said the majority of pies made for Thanksgiving are pumpkin.

Kathy's Pies makes and sells its own dough, but don't ask for the recipe, it's a secret. Terri Henecke said the dough isn't the only thing that's hush, hush.

"I think we're a sercret in town. We don't do a lot of advertising. Everything has always been word of mouth," she said.

Kathy's Pies was recently featured in Midwest Living Magazine. The business's cherry crisp pie was picked as one of the favorite pies.
