Some agency heads unsure about pay cuts

DES MOINES (AP) -- Some state agency heads say they won't take a pay cut and others haven't decided whether to abide by Gov. Chet Culver's call for salary reductions in response to severe budget problems.

But the governor's spokesman, Phil Roeder, says it's not an option. He told The Des Moines Register on Friday that all department directors will see their pay reduced 10 percent.

When reached by the newspaper, 25 directors promised to take a cut, five were undecided and two decided against it.

Among those saying no are Iowa Department of Public Defense Adj. Gen. Timothy Orr, who says he's already paid less than entitled by state law, and Lottery head Terry Rich. He says a cut would take him below the minimum range for his position.

Those undecided are Drug control Policy Director Gary Kendell, Education Director Judy Jeffrey, Natural Resources director Rich Leopold, Regents Board Director Bob Donley and Veterans Affairs Director Patrick Palmersheim.
