Spooked about spending this Halloween?

DUBUQUE (KWWL) - With americans spending less again this Halloween, Hard times have spooked consumers to the tune of spending about a billion dollars less on halloween stuff this year.

So if you're spending less you're likely to go back to homemade. We rummaged through one thrift store and found some thrifty ideas.

Halloween's a week away but you don't want to spend a lot of money on a costume. But you want something that people will notice. Turns out you might find it at your local thrift store.

"We get Halloween costumes all year long both adults and kids and we've had a rush the last few weeks," said Mark Burns, Store Manager at the Dubuque Rescue Mission.

If you're looking for something to call a costume chances are you'll find that something here.

"More and more people are getting into recycling as opposed to getting new," said Burns.

The Mission Thrift Store has always been known for helping the community and providing items to those in need. But each October the store fills with all kinds of people looking for the perfect costume.

"This is molly our mannequin she's wearing a graduation gown. Maybe someone who wants to graduation or who is graduating," said Burns as he showed us around.

But the gown could be a judge costume. Meanwhile on mannequin is showing off a vintage dress. Which could serve as a cinderella, a princess or a sixties dress. Burns says vintages dresses like this one are also popular. In fact one was sold by the time we finished shooting this story. Obviously finding a costume here takes more time but he says it's all part of the fun.

"Appreciating halloween for what it is as opposed to doing something mainstream. You're probably only gonna wear it once and go as something different next year," said Burns.

But it doesn't stop with the clothes, there's shoes and accessories too. Wanna go as a bowler? How about a bowling ball. Wanna go as a baker? There are some baking tools. The possibilities are really endless and the savings well worth the time.

"With a little imagination and a few dollars you can find a fine costume," said Burns.

As you can see there's a chance you can find a costume that won't leave your wallet bone dry, unless of course it's part of your costume.

Many seasonal shops are recognizing the consumer desire to spend less. They're offering deals when you buy more than one costume. Many online stores are offering incentives like free shipping.
