Regents to look at tuition hike

IOWA CITY (AP) -- The Iowa state Board of Regents will take up a 6 percent tuition hike for the 2010 school year.

The regents' agenda, released Friday, indicates the board on Thursday will also consider a $100 surcharge in response to a $58 million midyear state budget cut. If approved, University of Iowa students would pay $6,924 for the 2009-10 school year.

Iowa students also face a 23.7 percent mandatory fee increase to pay for a new $69 million Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, which will open next summer. Coupling tuition and fees, Iowa students would see costs increase from $6,824 to $7,417 in 2010, which is an 8.7 percent increase or $593, if the plan is approved.

Out-of-state students would also see a 6 percent tuition increase, which would bump their tuition from $22,198 a year to $23,713.
