Late night icon born in Iowa in 1925


CORNING (KWWL) -- Television comedian Johnny Carson was born in the western Iowa town of Corning Oct. 23, 1925.

He was a Navy ensign and went to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln before beginning a career in television in California.

Carson started hosting his own show "Earn Your Vacation," followed by the ABC game show "Who Do You Trust?."

October 1, 1962, Johnny Carson was introduced as the new host of "The Tonight Show."

Carson won six Emmy Awards, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' prestigious Governors' Award in 1980 and a George Foster Peabody Award in 1986. In 1987 he was inducted into the ATAS Hall of Fame. And for his humanitarian efforts, the American Friends of Hebrew University honored him with the Scopus Award in 1989.

Carson died January 23, 2005.
