Registration for Salvation Army Holiday Programs begins Monday

Cedar Rapids (KWWL) -- Registration for this year's Salvation Army Holiday programs for those in need in the Cedar Rapids Area begins on Monday, October 26th.

The Salvation Army teams up with Wal-Mart and the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, HACAP, to provide holiday food boxes to families in need.  The boxes include everything needed to make a traditional holiday meal.

Last year, more than 1,500 families received the food boxes.

The Salvation Army is also teaming up with Toys for Tots and the Cedar Rapids Jaycees for "The Christmas Toy Shop."  Last year, more than 20,000 toys were collected and distributed to more than 2,700 needy children in Linn County.

You must register to participate in these programs and applications will be available from October 26th through November 20th at The Salvation Army located at 1000 C Avenue Northwest in Cedar Rapids.

No appointment is necessary and applications will be accepted Monday through Friday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m.  Evening hours will be held on Thursday, November 12 and Thursday, November 19 from 4 to 8 p.m..

Households that meet the income guidelines of 185% of the poverty level are eligible to apply for the food boxes, and those households with kids age birth to 17 qualify for the toy shop. 

To apply, you must show an Iowa issued picture identification, social security cards for each member of the family and proof of income.
