CV Alliance Announces Support of Local Option Sales Tax

The Greater Cedar Valley Alliance is officially on record as supporting renewal of the Local Option Sales Tax. Voters will be asked to renew the tax on election day, November 3. Members of the Greater Cedar Valley Alliance Board of Directors have unanimously voted in favor of renewing the special tax. The Alliance released the following press release in announcing its support.

Saying that the "revenues from this sales and service tax are used for key infrastructure for economic growth," the Board of Directors of the Greater Cedar Valley Alliance unanimously supported renewal of  the Local Option Sales Tax on the November 3.

"The Alliance board believes that the local option tax has been effectively used.  We are very cautious about supporting taxes that raise the cost of doing business or purchasing items in the Cedar Valley economic area, but everyone can see the results in the reconstructed streets in Waterloo and Cedar Falls. Both cities have pledged to continue to use the proceeds in the same manner if the voters reauthorize the tax. Also, the proceeds have been used to fund important improvements in other communities such as the sports complex in Hudson," said Alliance Chair Ken Lockard.

The Alliance encourages governments at all levels to monitor operations continuously to discover ways to reduce property tax, sales and service tax, and other fees that are ostensibly taxes imposed on business and residents. The Local Option Sales Tax is viewed by the business and community leaders as an important stream of revenue for the cities.
