Word to the wise, don't speed in school zones.

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Word to the wise, don't speed in school zones.

The Iowa City Police Department will be participating in a special traffic enforcement effort spearheaded by the Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) in conjunction with the 2009 National Teen Safety Week. On Friday, October 23rd, Iowa City officers will be conducting increased traffic enforcement in school zones as part of this statewide effort.

According to the Iowa GTSB, the number of teen drivers involved in serious injury and fatality crashes is rising. Some concerning statistics include:

  • In 2008, young drivers (ages 15-20) accounted for 9% of licensed drivers in Iowa; however, they were involved in 11% of fatal crashes and 15% of serious injury crashes during the same period.
  • In 2008, sixty-five young drivers were involved in serious injury accidents.
  • In 2008, forty-eight young people died in traffic crashes.
  • In 2007, young drivers represented 17% of all drinking drivers involved in fatal crashes.

In an effort to affect change and to focus attention on safe teen driving, the Iowa City Police will be focusing traffic enforcement efforts on school zones and nearby streets. The day-long effort will occur primarily before and after school, but will also encompass extracurricular activities occurring Friday evening and night.
