Fewer than 125 Iowa families still in FEMA homes

DES MOINES (KWWL) - More Iowans displaced from their homes because of the floods of 2008 are moving out of FEMA-supplied temporary housing units and into a permanent residence.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, as of October 21, 124 families remain in the units, down from 197 on August 18, 2009. Just over a year ago (Oct. 7, 2008), 564 families were staying in the temporary units at the peak of the disaster.

Families may continue to live in the units as long as they are eligible and will be recertified each month to determine their eligibility. FEMA housing specialists continue to work closely with each household to assist them in their plans for permanent housing. FEMA's temporary housing program ends Nov. 27, 2009.
