UI receives $35 million in national grants

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- University of Iowa health care research leaders are highlighting the importance of funding from the National Institutes of Health. The UI Carver College of Medicine received 35 million dollars as a part of 80 grants under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.

And it couldn't come at a better time. Research leaders say that with recent state cuts, these grants keep their program moving forward.

Dr. Paul Rothman; Dean, UI college of medicine; "It helps that some of this money goes to faculty salary, and it helps us relieve salary that would otherwise would have to be on other budgets like the state budgets," said Dean of the Carver College of Medicine, Dr. Paul Rothman.

More than 10 million dollars of the grant money will fund salaries and benefits for faculty, staff, and students over the next two years.
