Volunteers Needed to Plant Trees in Parkersburg

Parkersburg (KWWL) -- Volunteers are needed to help plant 30 new trees in Parkersburg this weekend.

Trees Forever is organizing the fall tree planting as part of its Recover, Replant and Restore program this Saturday, October 24th.

The organization has been helping Parkersburg since a tornado ripped through the town on May 25, 2008.  Not only have they helped with tree planting, they also helped the town revise their tree ordinance.  Saturday's planting will showcase some of the recommended tree species in the ordinance.

Volunteers can gather at the intersection of Conn Street and Dorothy Avenue, one block south of City Hall at 9:00 a.m., dressed for outdoor work and weather.  Volunteers are asked to bring gloves and wear heavy shoes or work boots.  You can also bring rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows if you have them.

The approximately 30 trees will be planted in a part of Parkersburg that was in the direct path of the E-F-5 tornado.

There will also be a number of trees, both evergreen and deciduous, available to Parkersburg residents for planting at their homes. The donated trees are free and will be available on a first-come basis.

For more information, contact Meredith Borchardt at 641-430-3854.

Two Cedar Rapids businesses are donating resources for this tree planting.  Fleming Landscape & Irrigation is donating over 150 landscape-sized trees and CRST International is transporting the trees to Parkersburg.
