Schools close, more than 900 students sick

ST. CHARLES, Ill. (AP) -- St. Charles East High School in suburban Chicago is closing its doors from Wednesday through Friday after more than 900 students stayed home sick.

School officials said the students showed a variety of symptoms on both Monday and Tuesday, but there were no confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus. Still, officials say their absences were disrupting the normal operations at the school, prompting the decision to close for the rest of the week.

Kane County Health Department executive director Paul Kuehnert says only 80 to 90 students had specific flu symptoms, making it likely many absences may have been prompted by parental concerns.

Meanwhile, LaSalle County officials decided to close Serena Grade School after 69 students called in sick or went home with flu-like symptoms on Monday.
