Nick Anderson named Waterloo Firefighter of the Year

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Five year veteran and Waterloo native Nick Anderson was named Firefighter of the Year Monday in Waterloo.

Dozens of people gathered at Elk's Lodge for the Exchange Club Presentation luncheon, including Nick's five brothers coming from all over.  His sister could not make it because she was in Japan.

Officers say Anderson is always asking what he can do next.  He is a medic on 338 out of fire station number eight.  He heads up the honor guard, and says he says he knows what comes first.

"Helping the citizens of Waterloo is number one and then working with just an awesome team," Nick Anderson said.

"This is what he's wanted to do and to see someone fulfill their dreams and have the enthusiasm that he does.. it's a great honor for the family but what's even better is for the citizens of Waterloo," brother Thomas Anderson said.

Anderson also received a community service award.  The Exchange Club is also paying for a night in Dubuque.

An interesting note: due to staffing issues, Anderson and other Waterloo firefighters at the luncheon were still working Monday.  They could have been called to duty at any moment, but that did not happen.
