WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Defense Department says a central Illinois native has died while serving in the military in Afghanistan.

Army Sgt. Christopher Rudzinski of Rantoul, Ill., died Friday near Kandahar. The 28-year-old soldier was wounded when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.

Rudzinski was assigned to the 293rd Military Police Company, 385th Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne) out of Fort Stewart, Ga.

He was a 1999 graduate of Rantoul Township High School, where he was a band member and participated in school musicals.

The Defense Department says, as of Sunday, at least 796 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001.
