POSTVILLE (KWWL) - Fire crews for more than nine departments were called to the scene of a fire on Lawler Street in Postville. An apartment fire above the Postville Bakery spread through on the building, destroying the bakery and damaging nearby buildings.

At about 8:30 Saturday morning crews received to Lawler Street in Postville. The Postville bakery and restaurant was on fire. More then nine different fire departments battled the blaze well into the afternoon.

The Postville bakery has been around since the 1800's. For the last 15 years Jennifer Herrera has owned the business, which has been passed down for several generations. They're baked goods are well known in Postville especially their famous rolls.

The fire was believed to have started in the apartments upstairs. As people watched from across the street owners watched in awe the bakery was burning to the ground. Not what anyone expected to wake up to on saturday morning.

"Everybody got out save and everything else is just materials so we'll just got from here," said Judy Feichert.

Once the fire was contained crews demolished the building and started clearing the street of debris. Officials say no one was hurt in the fire, everyone escaped from the building safely. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Red Cross has set up a disaster center at the nearby church. We don't know how many people were living in the apartments above the bakery but the red cross says they're looking for donations of any kind, especially men's clothing.
