Branstad says he's retiring from Des Moines University

DES MOINES (KWWL) - Former Gov. Terry Branstad says he's retiring as president of Des Moines University to more fully explore the potential of becoming a candidate for governor next year.

Speaking with reporters Friday, Branstad put no timetable on his decision, but he left little doubt that he'll join the race.

Branstad, a Republican who served four terms as governor, says he was motivated by what he described as a financial debacle that has stricken state government. He says he has the experience and knowledge to straighten out the state's finances.

He announced his resignation after giving the news privately to faculty, staff and students.

Democrats immediately attacked Branstad, saying he would favor big tax increases to solve Iowa's problems, a reference to tax hikes he supported as governor.
