State budget cuts could mean thousands of jobs

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Officials say budget cuts ordered by Governor Culver will force layoffs of at least 1,000 state workers.

House Speaker Pat Murphy Thursday predicted that when cuts by Iowa's public university system are added in, the number could reach 2,000.

Officials say the job cuts will be felt in a variety of ways -- from slowing collection of child support payments to shortening the length of the legislative session from 100 days to 80.

A spokesperson with the governor's office says Culver had no choice in making the 10 percent across the board cuts because of a dramatic drop in tax revenue this fall.
