High expectations for Cyclone hoopsters

AMES (KWWL) -- Craig Brackins has never made an NCAA tournament, and that along with the fact Iowa State may just have their most talented team in years, kept the All-American a Cyclone for at least one more year.

"There's a lot of unfinished business I've got to take care of before I departed out of here," says Brackins, "With the team we had coming in I felt I couldn't leave."

The Cyclones struggled to a 15-17 mark last season, but with the addition of top 20 recruit Chris Colvin, juco transfer and preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Marquis Gilstrap, and highly sought after big man Laron Dendy, ISU is now deeper and much more athletic.

"We have guys that can get up and down the floor and we have some depth," says head coach Greg McDermott, "If you're going to take advantage of depth you have to play at a little faster pace, and that will be our intention from the start of the season."

With more guys contributing about Craig Brackins, the Cyclones believe this is the year they return to the postseason.

"Everything seems to be in place with 9 players returning this season, says McDermott, "We have an opportunity to make a move in the Big 12."
