WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The Volunteer Center of Cedar Valley Thursday released a list of volunteer opportunities in the area.  Here is that list:

• The Hawkeye Adult Literacy Program needs caring, patient volunteers who are interested in education/teaching and are willing to work one-to-one with an adult who needs to improve his/her reading skills. Schedules and meeting sites are flexible for the literacy tutoring sessions. Opportunities exist Monday through Friday. Volunteers age 18 and over are welcome.

• Hartman Reserve Nature Center needs interested individuals to assist in leading programs for school groups. Programs are offered for PreK-12th grade. Most school visits are 3 hours long with students rotating through 20-45 minute sessions. Opportunities exist Monday through Friday with flexible times. Volunteers age 18 and over are welcome.

• The Hawkeye Valley Area Agency on Aging needs volunteers to make education outreach calls Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Shifts are flexible. Volunteers ages 55 and over are welcome.

• Cedar Bend Humane Society needs volunteers to assist in organizing a children's haunted barn, face painting, pumpkin patch, human and pet costume contest and a bonfire cookout. Also, help is needed at volunteer sign up stations for future events and opportunities. Opportunities exist October 23 and 24 with flexible times throughout the day. Volunteers age 16 and over are welcome.

Volunteer Buzz: The volunteer rate for teenagers increased 1.4 percentage points from 24.5% in 2007 to 25.9% in 2008.
