Regents debate spending cut options

URBANDALE (KWWL) - An Iowa Board of Regents teleconference is underway tonight. It's to discuss how they'll deal with Governor Culver's ten percent, across the board, budget cut for next year. The meeting started at 4:15 pm.

Items on the agenda include discussion on a proposal to halt new building construction projects. They are also talking about possibly initiating a hiring freeze.

Regent Ruth Harkin weighed in on the possibility of adding a tuition surcharge this spring, as well as an additional tuition increase at state universities in 2011.

"I don't see that, because of the economic hardship on our students, I don't see where doing both of those would be tenable," Harkin said.

Look for more on this story on and tonight on the news at ten.
