Posted:

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Longtime Waterloo restaurant owner, Kenneth E. ‘Morg' Morgensen, has died at age 79. He passed away at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

For some 42 years, until his retirement in 2002, Morg owned and operated the hugely popular Morg's Lunch on Mulberry Street in downtown Waterloo. He was a life member of the Waterloo Elks Club. For decades, loyal patrons enjoyed Morg's friendly conversations and his amazing breakfasts and lunches, especially his unbeatable hash brown potatoes. Morg was a friend to all and treated everyone with respect.

A U.S. Army veteran, Ken served in the Korean War from 1951 until 1953. He married Carolyn Buhr in Tripoli in 1956. They were married 40 years. Carolyn preceded Morg in death in 1996. He is survived by his daughter, Julie Barnes of Prescott, Arizona, his son, Scott, of Cedar Falls, and six grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, October 15 at 3:00 PM at the Kerns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel in Waterloo, with internment in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call on the family Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 PM and Thursday after 2:00 PM at the Funeral Home.

A gloomy and rainy afternoon didn't stop people from making it out early to the campgrounds Friday. By the afternoon, Scales Pointe Campground and Marina in North Liberty, was full of RVs, tents, and houseboats ready to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend. "We don't worry about the weather. We just put a tent up, put a poncho on, and drink in the rain," Mike Kirk said. Kirk said he's been camping at the same spot for five years now and that it's the best place to be. ...More >>
