Flu behind spike in school absences

H1N1 is making for an early start to the flu season.

We're tracking flu like symptoms at Waterloo's East High School with a 22-percent absentee rate.

One elementary school in Cedar Falls reported ten-percent of its students were absent.

A total of 18 schools in Iowa are seeing similar absentee rates.

And because seasonal flu has not yet shown up, the Iowa Department of Public Health tells us the majority, if not all, of flu cases are H1N1.

Four Iowa deaths have been tied to it so far this year.

Iowa averages one-thousand every year due to complications of seasonal flu.

If you're still worried about catching it, remember the three c's:

Cover your cough.

Clean your hands.

And contain germs.
