Teen smoking: kicking the habit

Most teens don't reach out for help quitting smoking, but experts have found a way to make it easy for them to kick the habit.

Researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found personalized telephone counseling helps teens quit.

They studied over two thousand high school smokers, half of which were enrolled for phone counseling.

They found over 21 percent of those in the telephone intervention group quit smoking for six straight months, compared to 17 percent of those not given any treatment.

Experts say reaching out to teens, offering a private quitting solution, and a personal treatment approach all contributed to the program's success.

Over 25 percent of high school seniors smoke monthly, and young adults age 18 to 24 have the highest smoking rates in the U.S.
