Layoffs "unavoidable" for Iowa court system

DES MOINES (KWWL) - Layoffs are expected in the Iowa judicial system.   The courts must trim $16 million in spending to meet cuts ordered by Governor Chet Culver.

In a message to workers Monday, Iowa's chief justice Marsha Ternus says 95% of the court system's budget is personell-related and a reduction in the workforce is unavoidable.

Details on the number of affected workers is expected later in the week.

This follows court-furloughs earlier this year to try to cut spending.
