Vander Plaats endorsed by civil rights leader

DES MOINES (AP)--Republican gubernatorial hopeful Bob Vander Plaats has been endorsed by the president of the Iowa-Nebraska chapter of the NAACP.

The Rev. Keith Ratliff Sr., a registered Democrat, says Democrats should not take the votes of minorities for granted. He says he believes Vander Plaats is the right person to lead Iowa in the future.

Ratliff is the pastor of Maple Street Missionary Baptist Church in Des Moines and he has been a Democratic activist.

He says Democratic governors have failed on their pledge to increase minority hiring in state government. He says another factor in his decision is Vander Plaats' opposition to gay marriage.

Vander Plaats is making his third bid for the Republican nomination for governor.
