Free picture restoration for flood victims

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -Flood victims had a chance to get flood damaged photos restored Friday and Saturday for free.

Operation Photo Rescue (OPR) was at the African American Museum of Iowa.

The organization started with Katrina when a few photographers from Virginia wanted to lend a helping hand.

"It's amazing how everyone comes together because everyone can identify with photos of how much it'd mean to them if they lost their's," Operation Photo Rescue President Margie Hayes said.

Since it has helped Katrina victims restore photos, the organization has grown to 2,000 volunteers in 50 states and 49 other countries. The organization is run completely on volunteers and private donations.

Cedar Rapids was 1 of their 2 stops this year.  OPR's other stop is Galveston, Texas.

"It's rewarding when people come in and say 'I hope you can help me on this, I really do think there's no way" and look at the photo and say 'hey this is an easy restore and they will come back looking like the original," Operation Photo Rescue President Margie Hayes said.

Flood victims were able to get up to 20 photos restored.
