LA PORTE CITY (KWWL) -- The Marion Indians remained undefeated, and set the stage for a 3A District showdown next week, with a convincing, 37-9 victory over previously unbeaten Union Friday night in La Porte City.
A huge crowd packed the stands on both sides for this marquee matchup in La Porte City on Union Senior recognition night.
The Knights came out fired up, taking the opening drive deep into Marion territory. The Marion defense bent, but did not break, on the drive, and Union had to settle for a Steve McGarvey field goal, and a 3-0 lead.
Marion drove deep into Union territory, but pressure from Weston Hennings forced Indians quarterback, Dalton Combs, out of the pocket. Combs had to throw back across the grain and Brad Siebel intercepted for Union, to stop the Marion drive cold.
The Marion offense started rolling for Coach Tony Perkins mid-way through the second quarter. Senior tailback, Logan Pickering, used a nifty spin move to score from the 8-yard line, to give Marion the lead, 7-3.
Later, Dalton Combs used play action to hold the secondary, and fired long to Cory Kramer on a 42-yard touchdown pass. Marion set up for the point-after, but Cory Kramer, now the holder, rolled out and passed to Ryan Hubbell for the 2-point conversion. Marion led at halftime, 15-3.
Union scored on the opening drive of the second half, cutting the lead to 15-9, but Marion took control from that point on and beat Union, 37-9.
It's the first loss of the season for Union, while Marion stays undefeated and now can look toward the 3A District 4 showdown next week in Marion, against undefeated Maquoketa.
