CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- City High looks poised to do what it did last year during the regular season.
They're hoping it's not a precursor to the same finish.
The Little Hawks beat Cedar Rapids Prairie 34-0 at John Wall stadium, and in doing so improved to 7-0 on the year. City High is now in position for its second straight undefeated regular season.
It was the defense that got the number one team in the Mississippi Valley jump started.
Ellis Jordan intercepted the Hawks' Josh Purman and returned it to the 13 yard line. Three plays later, the future Hawkeye A.J. Derby got to the end zone from seven yards out. After a blocked extra point, City High was up 6-0.
That score looked to get the offense rolling again.
In the second quarter Derby again scored on the ground, this time a 25 yarder. The next series Derby hit John Chelf in stride on a 27 yard pass play. The Little Hawks took a 20-0 lead into the break.
City High finished the night with 34, shutting out Prairie.
City High will host Waterloo West next week before finishing up at Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Last year the Little Hawks were ousted in their first game in the postseason after finishing the regular season perfect.
