DUBUQUE (KWWL) - Also in the Mississippi Valley Conference, 10th ranked Dubuque Hempstead with a very stiff test as the Mustangs host a Cedar Rapids Xavier team that has won four of its last five games.
It was the coldest night yet but the question on everyone's mind: Could the Saints defense heat up enough to beat the 10th ranked Mustangs?
Xavier just outside the top 10, behind one game in the conference. At 4-2 with losses to Iowa City High and Linn Mar.
It was homecoming night for the Mustangs. By the second quarter, Xavier was up by 7. Hempstead with the ball its 3rd and goal when quarterback Matt Ehlers throws one to Brad Duwe. But he's stopped by Nick Garland. That leads to this field goal. It was 7-3 Xavier at half.
Second half action: First drive, a 74 yard touchdown run from Ryan Sander. As he celebrates with his teammates. Xavier he would score the very next drive. Take the 21-3 lead.
Xavier adds a win to their record: 28-9.
The Saints shutting out two Dubuque teams, two weeks in a row, both on homecoming. It's Xavier's defense that helped them this week. They're ranked number one in the MVC only allowing an average of 78.8 yards per game. But despite the loss Hempstead is tied with Xavier at second place in the conference. They both sit 5-and-2.
