Town moves to higher ground

CRAWFORD COUNTY (KWWL) - A village tired of rebuilding every year after a flood, began building up on higher ground Friday.

Relentless rains and heavy flooding the last two years in Gays Mills, Wisconsin, forced many residents to move and businesses to find another place.

After the floods in 2007 and 2008, the village took steps to remove the threat of flooding by moving the town all together. On Friday, residents used golden shovels to break ground on earth they hope does not move the next time it floods.

The move is optional but many plan to move their homes and businesses. It won't be cheap, taxpayers will fork over an estimated $13 million to make the new Gays Mills a reality.

In addition to new homes and businesses, there will be a town center and government buildings.
