Update: One injured in Cedar Rapids apartment fire

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - A one year old girl and a Cedar Rapids Police officer have been taken to the hospital following a late afternoon fire at an apartment complex on J Street Southwest in Cedar Rapids.

The fire was called in at around 4:33 p.m. this afternoon at the Cedar Valley Apartments at 3000 J Street Southwest.

When police arrived on scene, a woman said that a one-year-old girl was still inside the apartment.

Officers tried to get up to rescue the girl, but they were overcome by heat and smoke.

Firefighters got into the apartment and got the little girl out.  The child was transported to St. Luke's Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

There was significant fire, heat and smoke damage throughout the second floor and smoke damage to the first floor of the apartment.  There were no working smoke alarms in the apartment.
