Smoke sends Iowa students home early

KEOKUK, Iowa (AP) -- Classes are to resume at Keokuk High School in southeast Iowa after smoke filled the building when the heat was turned on for the first time.

Assistant Principal Gary Benda says students were sent home early on Wednesday after the heating pipes that were painted this summer started smoking.

Benda says the pipes and walls on the lower level were painted with a standard latex paint, but because of high humidity, the paint didn't dry completely.

The smoke set off the school's fire alarm and students left the building. They were sent home for the day.

Superintendent Greg Reynolds says the doors were opened to air out the high school. No damage was done, and Reynolds expected no more problems.
