Thermo Fisher Scientific announced today that it would cease operations at its manufacturing facility in Dubuque, Iowa, and transfer the functions to other existing Thermo Fisher locations in the U.S. We anticipate that all Dubuque employees will remain in their positions through December 31, 2009, with phased layoffs occurring between January and September 2010. The facility is expected to close by the end of September 2010.

The decision affecting Dubuque was made only after an extensive internal strategic review, and is the result of a number of business factors, including review of current and projected customer needs, and the capacity of existing Thermo Fisher manufacturing facilities. It is not a reflection on the quality or efficiency of the work performed by the employees in Dubuque.

Thermo Fisher Scientific is working closely with the approximately 350 affected employees in Dubuque to provide a comprehensive transition plan. We are doing everything we can to make this difficult transition as smooth as possible for our employees. All Dubuque employees are encouraged to apply for positions in other parts of the company. In addition, we are offering severance packages, career counseling (including support in resume writing, identifying job opportunities, etc.) and other support services through our Employee Assistance Program and the Iowa Workforce Development Agency.

This was an extremely difficult decision to make; we recognize the significant impact this announcement has on Dubuque employees and the community. We deeply appreciate the commitment of our employees, both in the past and as we work collaboratively to ensure a smooth transition while continuing to provide quality products and services for our customers.
