Local church serves up hamburgers to high school students

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) For ten years one church has been serving up food for a local high school on Homecoming.

It's a grill out organized by First Christian Church in Cedar Falls for students and staff at Cedar Falls High School. The school and church are located right next to each other.

"About ten years ago we decided it was good to be a good neighbor to the high school and we started serving hamburgers and hot dogs during lunch time. It has grown to the point now we're seving 1200 students and faculty," said Gary Chambers with First Christian Church.

Usually the food is served in the church parking lot, but rainy weather kept the students inside this year.

Cedar Falls High School students and staff filed through grabbing lots of food. Most of the food is made by volunteers or donated by church members.

"It's a way of saying we appreciate you and it's an outreach project and we're not trying to evangelize the students, but they do appreciate it, and they know we're here," said Chambers.

The day of the event, about 25 volunteers help cook the food and serve the food.

"We enjoy doing it even though it's a lot of work," said Chambers.
