Gronstal: Lawmakers could kill Iowa film program

JOHNSTON (AP) -- The top Democrat in the Iowa Senate says lawmakers will look closely at tax credits offered to lure movie producers and that the program may not survive the scrutiny.

Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal says unless the inquiry shows long-term benefits to the program, he thinks there's a 50-50 chance it will be killed.

His comments follow disclosures that up to $300 million in tax incentives have been offered to movie producers but that sloppy records make it hard to justify the costs. There also have been reports of questionable spending.

Gronstal was speaking Friday on the Iowa Public Television program, "Iowa Press."
