UPDATE: Assault suspect dies after shooting himself

WATERLOO (KWWL) - Police say a man who held his ex-girlfriend against her will has died after shooting himself in the head.

43 year-old Johnny Dixon died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on Tuesday night.

Law enforcement received reports on Tuesday afternoon that Dixon had been spotted near Look Out Park in Cedar Falls. The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Department and police from Waterloo and Cedar Falls searched the area, even temporarily putting River Hills School on lockdown.

Police found Dixon near the Cedar River around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Dixon had a gun and was threatening to hurt himself. Police established a perimeter and tried to talk with Dixon. Around 3:15 p.m. Dixon shot himself. He was taken to Allen Hospital in Waterloo and then transferred to Iowa City by helicopter.

Police had been searching for Dixon since Sunday when his ex-girlfriend reported being assaulted and held hostage in her home for about 10 hours. The woman told police that Dixon came to her house around 2 a.m., armed with a handgun, and she was able to escape around 12 p.m. When police went to search the house, Dixon was gone.

Waterloo police are continuing to investigate.
