Southwestern Ill. day care owners admit fraud

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) -- Sentencing will be in January for a southwestern Illinois couple who've pleaded guilty to fraud and other federal counts in connection with their day care center.

Forty-year-old Robby Owens and 39-year-old Monica Owens of O'Fallon admitted in federal court in East St. Louis that they failed to pay taxes for more than $1.2 million in earnings from 2004 to 2007.

The owners of Great Kids Inc. in East St. Louis also admitted they received about $150,600 in federal money for kids who didn't attend the day care.

Federal prosecutors say the pair owes more than $249,000 in taxes.

Both defendants pleaded guilty to tax evasion. Monica Owens also pleaded guilty to stealing funds from a federal program and defrauding food stamp benefits.
