Smoking bans and heart attack risks

Healthy diet and exercise are sure ways to lower your risk for heart attack, but according to a new study, where you live can also help.

Research shows communities that have smoking bans have significantly fewer heart attacks in the years that follow its implementation.

Experts reviewed 13 studies that looked at changes in heart attack rates after smoking bans started in American and European cities.

They found heart attacks dropped 17 percent the year after the smoking ban, and went down 36 percent in the three years following.

The studies included data from 24 million people.
