Farmer making combines safer in son's memory

JOHNSON COUNTY (KWWL) -- One Eastern Iowa farmer who lost his son in a farm accident is now working to make combines safer.

Roger Stutsman lost his son last year on a farm near Hills.

Months later, Stutsman and Loran Steinlage began looking for answers to make combines safer.

The idea is for two chains to shift weight from the combine pickup to the crossbar of the header trailer. The simple safety device works to prevent tipping the head of the combine when it's placed on a trailer for transportation.

All money raised will go to farm safety programs.

The men hope equipment manufacturers notice their product and put a universal hooking point on combines.
