Jewish groups protest Saturday Iowa caucuses

DES MOINES (AP) -- A coalition of 18 Jewish organizations is protesting the decision to hold next year's precinct caucuses on a Saturday, a move they say will disenfranchise Jews who observe the Sabbath.

The groups announced Friday they had sent letters to the chairmen of the state's Republican and Democratic parties asking that the date of the 2010 caucuses be changed from Jan. 23. The parties historically have held the caucuses during the week but agreed to the change in hopes of increasing participation by a shift to the weekend.

Republican Party Chairman Matt Strawn says he'd talk about the situation with Democratic Party Chairman Michael Kiernan. Democratic Party officials didn't immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.
