Grocery stores experience canned pumpkin shortage

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - If you're looking forward to pumpkin pie this holiday season, you may want to start looking for canned pumpkin now. That is, if you can find it. Many grocery stores are finding it to be in short supply right now.

Cedar Falls Hy-Vee manager Rob Green says he's been out of it for a few months, a result of poor pumpkin weather in the midwest. "I think it's kind of a cumulative effect," said Green. "Last year's season was a little light as well."

His store still has plenty of other pie-fillings, but green worries that this part of the shelf will still be empty when the holidays roll around. "You're going to see it affect our jack o' lantern pumpkins and things like that as well."

Green says it's not just Hy-Vee; other grocery store chains and smaller markets are experiencing shortages. He pre-ordered a supply of cans, which should get to his store by early November, but he doesn't want to make any promises.

"I would like to say yes, I know 100-percent for sure, but basically, I would say if you see canned pumpkin out there, snatch it up if you know you're going to need it."

Local farmer Dave Myers says his pumpkin crop is finally turning orange. They're about a week behind schedule this year and he says he won't have an excess of them, due to rainy weather in late July and early August.
