Harkin leads panel on cell phone safety

WASHINGTON (KWWL) - Lawmakers are trying to determine if radiation from cell phones cause cancer.

Senator Tom Harkin, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Health subcommittee, says he doesn't want to raise alarm, but is looking into whether cell phones are safe.

In a hearing Monday a doctor testifed that radiation exposure could be reduced by using some hands free ear-pieces, instead of holding a phone to your ear.

Studies have shown no conclusive relationship between brain cancer and cell-phone use.

But scientists say longterm research doesn't exist yet because most people haven't owned cell phones longer than ten years.
