Dragons on the river: Annual Dubuque boat races

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- This weekend in Dubuque you may have seen some dragons traveling on the Mississippi River. We're talking about the 22nd annual Dubuque Dragon Boat Association boat races.

36 teams competed all day Saturday and Sunday in a round-robin style of competition. Teams have 18 paddlers, one drummer, a flag catcher and a sternsman.

Teams compete in adult or junior divisions, and this year included a record breaking 16 junior teams.

Also now annual fixtures in the races are local cancer support groups.

"Cancer was such a hard thing for us to deal with at first, and when we get together with other cancer survivors, it's just so comforting and so much camaraderie," Cancer Survivors Team Captain Lisa Latham said.

The "Breast of Friends" breast cancer support group has paddled before, but had so many people last year they needed to add a team so more people got the chance to paddle. This year was the first year for the "Cancer Survivors" team.
