Neighbor: He seemed like a nice fellow

WATERLOO (KWWL) - John Spates of Waterloo was suprised by all of the commotion on the 600 block of Keystone Street early Saturday morning.

"I saw a body lying in the yard," said Spates.

Police officers were called to 611 Keystone Street around 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning on a domestic violence call.

Investigators say when they arrived, a man started wrestling with officers.

The officers reported being overpowered by the man.

That's when police say one officer shot the man in the chest, killing him.

Investigators have not released the name of the man who died or the name of the officer who shot him.

"I knew he was a nice guy, he worked for a construction company. I met him a couple of times. They just had a rummage sale. He seemed like a nice fellow."

One officer was taken to the hospital for treatment, the other officer was not hurt.

Spates said the couple living at 611 Keystone Street moved in not too long ago.

"They moved in a couple of years ago, but he seemed like a nice fellow," added Spates.

Jeff Jacobson with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said an autopsy on the man will be conducted on Sunday.
